WC3Banlist Windows Vista Installation for Dummies

Postby Senkin » 07 Jan 2007, 17:43

ATTENTION: If you have any problems after following this guide, please create your own thread under the wc3banlist technical support section instead of using this thread.

Intro:
Well after having Windows Vista RTM (Build 6000) and refusing to be back on the evil Windows XP. I wanted to play Wc3 and use WC3Banlist with it as I play DOTA games. In the process of installing WC3Banlist, I had hopes that it would be easy and simple; I was wrong. There were all kinds of issues, and thats what I want to cover here. In this tutorial, you will learn how to install and use WC3Banlist with no issues at all. Also I would like to thank whomever sticked this thread. *I assume it was you Knarf, so thank you*

Table of Contents:

Part 1.) Installation of WinPCap 4.0 (You have to install this before WC3Banlist)
Part 2.) Installation of WC3Banlist 3.0 (DO NOT MISS A STEP!!!)
Part 3.) Installation of WC3Banlist Beta (REQUIRED TO MAKE HOTKEYS WORK WITH UAC ON + IE TO NOT CRASH!!)
    F.A.Qs

Part 1.) Installation of WinPCap 4.1 Beta 4

First we need to install WinPCap 4.1 Beta 4 because in Vista things has changed so WinPCap 3.0 that comes with WC3Banlist will not work. So to prevent that issue we need to follow the steps below.

Part 2.) Installation of WC3Banlist:

Now we need to install WC3Banlist and make sure we do not let it install the WinPCap that it comes with. To do that follow the steps below.

    1.) Download WC3Banlist 3.0 here -> http://www.wc3banlist.de/downloads.php
2.) Install WC3Banlist 3.0 (When you get to "Select Additional Tasks" make sure you have WinPcap 3.1 unchecked.)
3.) Run WC3Banlist for the first time and go through the wizard.

Part 3.) Installation of WC3Banlist Beta (REQUIRED TO MAKE HOTKEYS WORK WITH UAC ON + IE TO NOT CRASH!!)

You have to download the latest beta after downloading and installing WC3Banlist 3.0 unless you do not want your hotkeys working when you have UAC (User Account Control) on. Also if you want to use IE7 and WC3Banlist at the same time without IE7 crashing as soon as you type.

Part 4.) Facts and Questions

Q: Does it work on x64 Bit Vista?
A: Hell yes! So long as you have latest WinPCap Installed which came out Jan 5 2007.

Q: What if I already have WC3Banlist installed?
A: All you have to do is make sure you have the latest WinPCap (Currently 4.0 Beta 3) and then just follow step three of part two.

Q: I followed your steps and I still cannot get DirectX-API to hook.
A: Remember to follow Part 2, Step 3 VERY carefully. Without administrator rights being given to WC3Banlist, you wont be able to get DirectX-API hooked OR the NIC card to work at all.

    Q: IE7 Crashes when WC3Banlist is ON!
    A: Follow Step 4 carefully

IMPORTANT! THIS STEP IS REQUIRED FOR BANLIST TO WORK WITH VISTA!
Q: I still cannot get banlist to work.
A: Try ensuring Wc3 is being ran as administrator if you have UAC (User Account Control) on. You can do this by right clicking your shortcut of wc3 and going to properties -> compatibility -> run this program as an administrator and check that box.

Thank you. I was actually going to try running as administrator (only found out yesterday that that option existed) but didn't get around too it. Runs as smooth as anything.

Welcome smoo, that is unusual that it is grey'd out, especially when you are logged in as administrator. Try logging in as another use with administrator privileges. I know that all I had to do is be logged into the account I had made when I was installing Vista. The only thing that might make a difference is what kind of Vista you installed (Ultimate or what?). I am gonna google it and see if I cannot find out culprit.

-edit-
After googling I saw this page: http://4sysops.com/archives/vista%E2%80 ... or-rights/
Try it and see if any of those can work for you.

P.S Just try skipping making the program as admin and see if it works for you ne way.

Okay, I solved the problem shown in my screenshot (2 posts above).

I had deactivated the prompt(?) that asks for confirmation if admin privileges are required. Dont know exactly how it is called. I had to activate it again. (The little Yes/No windows that appears if you try to do something that needs administrator privileges).

(System Control -> User Accounts -> Useraccountcontrol on/off)

After that I had to manually choose my network card in the WC3Banlist preferences: Worked fine. Thanks.

Please learn how to use the search function. It's not that hard. This problem does not apply to only vista installers.

Out of curiosity, what on the Vista OS changes target for banlist injecting? It's my understanding that the problem is a lack of an excecution path..? I'm still way over my head fooling around with Vista.

Knarf wrote:Means that you have an incompatible graphic card to display messages of WC3Banlist flicker free inside of WC3. You'll have to choose GDI mode at Prefs->Messaging.

How is it so hard to read that?

Please make sure you followed this instruction,
3.) Right click your shortcut on your Desktop and choose Properties. Then click the Compatibility tab and under Privilege Level, check Run this program as an administrator. Then click Ok. (If you do not do this you will not be able to detect your network card.)

That is the ONLY thing that can hold someone back on Vista when you have the Beta WinPCap and WC3Banlist. If you followed ALL of the steps in Part 1 + 2 in the Table Of Contents then you should have NO problem. If I am wrong then so be it and I will be here to help you all the way but I have done the install on 3 vista box's and I have yet to see ne other thing that can cause DirectX-API to not work.

EVERYONE PLEASE READ: Do not try and help me here on this thread when the person needing help has Vista, the #1 probolem people have with vista is the Administrator rights that block the programs from getting the rights it needs to run things in the background. Example: NPF cannot be started by Banlist without administrator privileges and therefor stopping Banlist from being able to use WinPCap to get the NIC info and send shit out.. TBH I cannot give the exact reason but thats the idea) Another example of administrator rights needing to be given to Banlist is the DirectX-API hook, without the administrator rights being given to WC3Banlist it cannot send the info or get the info it wants (I can be wrong ask Knarf the genius) and therefore cannot hook to wc3.
